Consumption Log

Media is a huge part of our daily lives, but I have never really stopped to realize how big of an affect it actually has on a Persons day. Below is a 16-hour media consumption log from my day on February 14th.

At 10:30 I wake up, for Valentines Day my girlfriend gives me a pound of coffee and a book about Paris. I spend the next half an hour or so looking at the book. The book includes pictures of Paris along with every restaurant, Pub/ Bar, and thing to do in Paris. The book made me think about Paris, it got me all excited for my trip to Europe, and I even counted down the weeks until I get to leave.

I turned on my computer, went to itunes, and began listening to the Shins album Kissing The Lipless, while I cooked breakfast. After breakfast I got online, my default homepage is apple.com, but I quickly re-navigated to the Pagosa Hot Springs website, to see how late they where open. I found out that on Saturdays they are open to 1:00 A.M. Then I navigated away from the Pagosa springs website and logged onto another website where I could watch episodes of scrubs for free online. For the next little while I watched two episodes of scrubs from season five. The episodes made me laugh, and I was very happy that they didn’t contain any commercials. After watching the scrubs episodes I got up and took a shower.

After my shower I got onto my computer once again put new music on my ipod, so I would have something new to listen to on my way to Pagosa. When I put music on my ipod I noticed that certain songs would remind me of things, or time periods throughout my life. For Example, the song Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John reminded me of the summer after my senior year of high school. It’s really strange how media can remind a viewer/listener of things that happened in their past. This lead me to think that sound plays an important part in how a person remember a specific situation. When I finished putting music on my ipod, I went to myspace and looked up the band stereo total to find out what the name of one of their songs was. I realize now that the only reason I looked up the band Stereo Total was because, other songs I was listening to made me remember that band. From Stereo Totals myspace, I found out that they are playing a show at Kilby Court in Salt Lake on March 28th, and I am now planning on attending that show.  After just looking at one myspace page my plans for the future have changed.

Next I got into my car turned on The Velvet Underground on my ipod and drove up to Victoria’s house.  While I waited for her to get ready, I listened to some music that she was already listening to, a band named The Sounds.

It was now 4:30 and time for an early dinner before heading to Pagosa Springs. Victoria and I listened to more music from my ipod and drove over to Cosinda Linda for dinner. After dinner we began our journey to Pagosa Springs, on the way we listened to a bunch of different music from my ipod. Once again I found myself thinking of different things, simply because each song triggered something different in my brain.

I spent the next few hours soaking in the lovely water at the hot springs. After the hot springs Victoria and I got back into my car and began the long journey back to Durango. On the way home we listened to a bunch of music from my ipod, and just as before specific songs made me of certain things.

When I got home my roommate reminded me that the Pj-Ladd and Eric Kostan game of skate was on the Berrics website. So I got on the Internet, checked out the Berrics website, and watched the game of skate. After the game of skate was over I navigated to Facebook and checked out my account. I had received a few comments, so I commented my friends back. After commenting my friends accounts, I navigated to the same website as earlier, and watch another episode of Scrubs. After the episode I got up and went to bed.

After reviewing my media use for one day, I realized that I spend much more time with media than I ever would have imagined. I have always believed that media messages were very powerful, but I never realized that I act a certain ways because of them. Also I never realized that media messages are responsible for much of my thought process throughout the day.
