Using sound in a Documentary

Using sound in a documentary is much different from using sound in a fiction project. Often the sound of people talking is overlaid with b-roll footage. It's important to get quality sound bites of interviews so that while in the post production process the editor can create a quality project. Therefore, I think its a good idea to record all of the interviews with a shotgun mic as well as an audio recorder. Using music in a documentary is a little different as well.

The documentary about ice-cream that we watched in class was very successful in there music choice. The music they chose went with the documentary because the song was about ice-cream. I think it was pretty cool how they used the same song throughout the documentary. By using the same song the creators were successful in making the documentary much more constant. I think it would be a good idea for my team to get a sort of theme song for our documentary, and every time music comes on it will be the same song.

In the video below the creators use both quality interview sound and quality music.  I think its good how the music is loud and then it goes quieter when someone talks, and then when there done talking the music goes loud again. I believe this is a good example about how to use sound in a documentary.
